looking back at February the 9th 2004

at the time I was earning about $500 a month from Social Security income. I had managed to find a place to live for 3 months where I could barter off for rent this would theoretically mean that I would have money to get my car back on the road. But no such luck

The following is a direct account from my journal 11 years ago... "I just received a letter from Social Security disability this is unbelievable abuse. The letter states that they will be reducing my March check by $230 then they state they will be reducing my money even further by taking another $100 off the total. My understanding is that if they're going to reduce me to 230 and then reduce me again by a hundred then I'll be earning $130 a month.they are putting me in a situation where I will not be able to pay the full rent to my landlord any longer...

"A typical day"

With lyme and fm (fibromyalgia) the moment I awaken I have excruciating pain.  I can't open my eyes, they burn so bad I can't open them til sometimes 1 p.m.  Although the doc gave me drops it is almost impossible to put drops in my eyes.

So today I awoke with severe rib and stomach pain and a severe headache with severe bodywide joint and nerve pain.  This is one of the reasons why I can't see any point in dating.

Tonight, was wonderful.  I chose an event from the newspaper called "topics for the new millennium" it was on the slow foods movement.  It wasn't a lecture but a conversation.  A few folks came up to me after wards and said that I'm so educated and well informed and learned a lot from me.

When you're sick you really don't want to leave the bed, but if you can you don't regret it.  Even at this moment I have severe tailbone pain and it's really hard to even sit down.  It's crazy and depressing most of the time.

"Looking back at 9/2004"

Authors note

I am renting a room in donna's house.  Not even knowing that her daughter was the landlord, one day someone bashed on my bedroom door.  It was donna's daughter(whom I didn't know existed at all) who began screaming and yelling at me to get out by the end of the day.  I quietly told her that I didn't even know who she is or what's going on, and that I'm certain she can't throw me out the same day. (I was behind in the rent, so what else is new, and it turned out this woman expected me to also hang out with donna who I wasn't even remotely compatible with)  She took me to court, (hoping to sue me)

Not thinking that I could even attend, I prepared the following letter for the courts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Honor,

I'm not present today in court to contest the claim but I do indeed owe 300 dollars and then some.  I'm here to present a statement regarding my situation and to ask for a 3 - 4 week extension due to my impossible trap.

Your honor I have been living in abject poverty for 11 years.  My annual earnings between 1993 and the present have been as low as $46.00 a year but average $4,000 a year.

I am in very poor health and have not always been well enough to work.  Although I collect Social Security Disability, they reduced my benefit for September down to $423.00 a month. My car alone costs me $400 to $500 a month due to frequent breakdowns.  I have to do everything in my power to keep the car, because it is my only hope or getting out of poverty.

I have been waiting 10.5 years for affordable housing as I was living in Baltimore prior to living in Indiana.  My name is supposed to come up on the Section 8 wait. list in December.

In the meantime, I applied at every single subsidized housing complex in Lafayette and have been turned down largely because I can't pass a credit check.  There is no housing in any state that a person earning $423.00 a month can afford.  Therefore I have had numerous, numerous, episodes of homelessness.

Due to my Lyme disease as well as the current employment situation in Lafayette I've been out of work for 19 months.  I am a client of vocational rehabilitation and have a job coach who says she will help me secure work.

Your Honor, I've done everything humanly possible to improve my situation.  Can you please give me until October 4th to exit the house?  It is my understanding that over and above the issue of money, it is Ms. B's hope to secure a live in companion for her mother.    There is an extra bedroom to which she could consider renting out while I try to find different accommodation.

Sincerely,

Elana R. Snyder

"health update"

Having to take imitrex daily for the severe headaches.  Been very weak, very tired.  Bummer because if I want a decent qol I have to work part time.  However unless I took cash work, The Department of Education is going to garnish my wages regarding the student loans.

I read for over an hour today, stories on the internet horror stories about heaps of folks who are suicidal because the student loans have destroyed their lives.

If My disability check were "as high as!" 750, then the doe would b garnishing me!  Incredible how many disincentives there are to better one's situation.

The girl downstairs is chain smoking and turns out I have a lot of legal rights (as I do re her barking dog also) but thse battles will take a lot of time and most ly energy that I do not have.

Sadly, the doc will not increase my pain meds and they aren't giving me near enough to obliterate most of the pain.

"Health Update"

Well, I've lost 35 lbs in the last year so happy about that.  I'd be lying if I said I feel better because I don't.  However, I can walk fast some days and / or certain times of the day.  That seems so contradictory because when my feet hit the floor in the a.m.  I really need a cane to safely stand and walk to the bathroom.  My feet don't work right and I can't keep my balance and those first few moves are unbearable.

Knowing that a normal life span for me would be about 82, and that for 31 more years I am going to wake up and feel excruciating pain regardless of meds, well it's a huge pill to swallow!

I was having horrible hot flashes, but the doc started me on Neurontin and I haven't had a hot flash since.  It seems the Neurontin has also helped with the nerve pain.

Still largely homebound, but I do have some things I'm looking forward to.  Like the mountain town camera club meeting.  ;)

Having daily headaches.  maybe if I use the neti pot it will kill the sinus infection and hopeful stop the headaches.  (h/a)

They keep trying me on sleep meds and I've been allergic to all of them, so i'm back on Seroquel for sleep.  What that means is that sometimes I only sleep an hour a night but it's a little better then nothing.
